Titles and Opening sequence of Hi! School - Love on
Mis en scene-setting
The opening sequence starts off with animations of the three protagonists and the setting magically appearing, as a book is opening by itself. I can tell that it's going to involve super-natural powers as well as Romance by the two boys standing on each side of the girl wearing angel clothes. This could indicate that there is a love triangle.
Mise en scene-props/costume
We can see our main characters wear different clothes in the opening sequence. We have two boys wearing what you call casual clothes in Korea, and then we have the angel girl who is wearing something extraordinary in the time period. Something that looks home made at the same time it looks like clothing a nun would wear. Lastly we have the magical book a possession owned by the angel world. This is a key aspect to the film because that prop brings in the love triangle. Without the book there wouldn't be a love triangle and the boys wouldn't have met the angel girl and neither would she have met the boys.
Mise en scene-characters
Furthermore into the opening sequence we have what happens at the end of the film at the beginning. However, it doesn't show us everything that happens at the end, leaving us with suspense and wanting to find out who was that girl? Why didn't they show her face? ETC. It starts off by showing one of the boys in University walking then happens to bump into a mysterious girl but, she ignores him and forgets to take the book that she has dropped.
Mise en scene-lighting
This lighting is excellent for Romantic films because the weather is sunny.
Acting
We have one of the main protagonist have his straight face expression when apologizing to the young lady who he bumped into by accident. Once he looked at the book that she forgot to take his facial expression was like haven't I seen this book before? I remember giving this book to someone I once loved type expression. It was a facial expression that got him thinking as well as the audience to feel sympathy for him.
Make up
The make up put on is to make them look natural as possible but to match with the weather, the bright colors to give us a sense of bubbly life.
Setting
The opening sequence is outside of a University somewhere in South Korea. I can tell this by being a Korean film and that everyone in the opening scene are Korean people so I doubt it will be set in North Korea, New York or even London. Plus all the major stars in Korea are in the south.
Camera
From when we see one of the main protagonist going up stairs to go inside the University there is a long distance shot from afar panning to the left. Then we two different shots in the count of 2 beats including a close up and mid shot of the boy and the mysterious girl. After the accidental bump when the boy goes to pick up the girls folders we see another close up shot of his face to convey his facial expression at that point.
Editing
After the animations which is fantastic we have a short fade in approximately about 2 - 4 seconds. The way they done the editing for this is really interesting. Korean films have a different style compare to westernized films and shows. They include shots that are probably not even authentic in the exam boards but these shots give us different emotions, and I personally find that fantastic. Not only do they do the basic fundamentals but they include various types of shots that shows us the setting in detail.
Sound
In the opening sequence they have a really lovey song sung only for the film. After that when the University scene fades in there is a beautiful orchestra playing the pianos and violins, and people in the campus talking with each other so there is diegetic sound and non diegetic sound.
Enigmas
The film creates a lot of Enigmas such as in the opening sequence why doesn't it show the girls face that the boy bumps into? Don't normally girls say something in a situation like that? Or why is the girl having her back to the boy when his talking to her? Isn't that being rude to the person trying to speak to you? The list can go on forever. This film has created so much questions that can be asked just from that little scene.
