Q7.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
This the answer to question 7 in a Prezi format.

Q6.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In the process of making my opening sequence I have learnt a lot about how to use the camera. Considering I have never worked with an equipment of that size before learning how to use it and it's function has been fantastic and a great experience. The thing that interested me about the camera is the channel switches. Depending on which channel you're on gives you different options. For example, if you're on channel 2 you can't record the sound from the camera any more because it's a channel for an external microphone or device to be connected to. This is something that me and my group forgot to do at the time we was recording. We put the camera on channel 2 and since we wasn't using any external plug-ins there was no sound at all, and we figured after playing back on the Macs.
This was frustrating because now we had footage that we liked but no sound in picking up books, walking and painting putting us in a disadvantage.
Another essential aspect I learnt from the camera and what needs to be noticed at all times are the mis-en-scene and lighting. You have to take note of the right lightning and colour scheme and make sure for different scenes that everything is perfect because it reflects back on the storyline, script and what's needed to be said at that time to make sure everything is linking together and making sense.

Q5.
How did you attract/address your audience?
I went around asking couple of people two questions including what they liked about the opening sequence and what they think could be improved. Also, I sent out text messages to people that I couldn't meet with due to how busy we all are to get involved as well by sending a recording of themselves answering those two questions, and then sending it to me. Now I did distribute this message to a lot more people than what you see in this video however, a lot of them are camera-shy and thus didn't participate.
I made the production fit the audience by the use of music choice. The music is officially for the opening sequence and only for the opening sequence which makes this even more unique. The really artistic and creative shot with the painting on camera is originality and get's the audience thinking "wow how did they do that?" and lastly the mis-en-scene and the representation of Jenna Lin appeals to girls that are stylish and somewhat interested in all the elements used in the openings sequence such as the manga books.
Q4.
This is a 7 slide presentation answering question 4 in the media coursework evaluation. This includes age range, gender, social background, interests and character types and ethnicity. Also I put images with arrows to indicate the age range between the girls.

Q3.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
LoveLife productions will distribute films like Unrequited Love and so would Working Titles. Romance has always been a major genre for both LoveLife productions and Working Titles, and are known for making films like this. How LoveLife productions came about is actually a funny story because it's linked to anime/manga. I happened to recall at the time an anime series that I watched recently. It was about Romance between two high school kids packed in with a lot of drama. From that I got the word 'Love' and 'Life' in my head because it's a common thing for Japanese shows to have love in their high school anime. From that I just put those two words + productions together and that's how LoveLife productions came about. From that we straight away knew as a group that were going to make a Romance film.

In order to get my film published in Cinemas I would need a distributor but to get one to do so I would probably have to send it off to film festivals if lucky enough to get a high bid which determines if my film can be screened. Another way my film can be distributed is online using various sites such as LoveFilm and Netflix.

Q2.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
As a group we decided to go with a stereotypical representation of "nerd" by getting a Oriental Asian girl that's interested in manga, art, cos-play and a lot more. Establishing this with the nature of the library gives you a sense of what type of character this girl is. With the mis-en-scene I wanted her to be surrounded by tons of books to indicate her interests for studying. This refers back to the original concept. As for fashion we picked the black stripy jumper, a red dotted skirt, twin tails and a strawberry pin for her hair. This to refer to her geeky side.

I wanted my opening sequence to reflect the conventions used in the drama-style opening sequences. For example, the breaking of the fourth wall. It's actually a risky move to make because it can scare the audience that are strung by the typical conventions of Romance and Comedy films. However, I felt that I wanted the actress to connect with the audience so it's like you're there. As far as camera angles, movements and shots I used a variation of mid-shots, close ups, behind the shoulder and other shots that were in awkward positions. Though, most of the time it was mid-shots and close ups to give you the feeling of being there with the actress as if you're her friend.
The script establishes the representation of the actress really well. We have the geeky girl with her books and paint brushes whilst being quiet quirky and playful with the audience. At some points even making fun of herself to give the audience something to smile or laugh over. I really like the script it definitely matched with her characteristics.
The genre I have chosen is Romance and Comedy.

Q1.
In what
ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I have emulated my research findings in my production by conducting a thorough research on Romance and Comedy film opening sequences, and gathering data on conventions used. I used this as guidance for my own film opening sequence by using most elements but breaking some conventions and the fourth wall. I done this by the use of music and getting my actress to look into the camera. Often you hear rocks songs in Romance and Comedy film opening sequences however, I decided to take a step away from that typical convention and make an original piece in its place. I decided to have a mixture of Hip-Hop and Korean Pop.
There have many changes made from the start of the research and planning process. Being departed from one idea to the other constantly pushed me and my production team to come to a conclusion. We challenged our research and planning by having big discussions, deciding as a group if we should cancel out one idea to go with the other consistently. It got to a point where our plot and initial ideas had to be redone with improvements. Changing the storyline and conduction a new research led to our final completion of our opening sequence, Unrequited Love.
The forms of conventions I used in my media film opening sequence is Super-titles. As a group we wanted our text to be merged with the footage, and we thought that it will be best suited for a Romance and Comedy opening sequence. These were developments that took place after changing some of our research and planning. Also, I generally am fond of the drama style opening sequences, it gave the idea of how to in-cooperate that with my opening sequence.
In conclusion my media product uses, develops and challenges forms of conventions of real media products by how I changed ideas that didn't work with ones that did. For example where to record our main actress because of unexpected issues we couldn't go with the original idea. We had to discard it and find somewhere else. Also, breaking conventions to make my product more unique whilst understanding that it could be scary to viewers seeing this change with the music and the breaking of the fourth wall.

Mixing Audio Tracks / Animations
After editing the footage in Final Cut Pro X and mix / mastering the voiceover in Logic Pro X. I put them in Sony Vegas Pro 13 to mix / master the footage, voiceover and soundtrack together. I did this by cutting and fading out each audio. In order for it be equal I highlighted all clips and faded them out. There are spaces between some of the audio, those are where the sound fades in to the original amount of volume. I marked with numbers the areas where I wanted specific voiceover said.
Once I accomplished that task I went on After Effects CS6 Extended to start creating the animations. This part was really fun to do because I got to play around with the effects as well as key-framing subjects I wanted to animate. Starting from scratch and going in-depth with the drawings and camera movements.
I decided to draw in some hearts to make it look even cooler.
I made some changes with the volume of audio tracks. I upped the volume of the soundtrack when the voiceover was running so you could hear clearly that it's there. Also, I added in fade ins. You can see this in the images above where I highlighted the section.

New Voiceover Script
Hi, this is me, the one surrounded by a force field of books.
Beneath this geeky exterior is me, a person who hides herself away in the world of literature and art.
Why am I alone you ask? Well....I'm a nerd, and I'm here at school before everyone else.
As they say, the early bird gets the worm.
But, academic success comes with drawbacks; other than satisfying my parents expectations, I have no motivation....*sigh*
What if I wasn't a nerd? I'd be popular, right....I mean, check out my fashion sense.
Check out these coordination skills.
My connection to art? Let's say that studying stresses the mind so art is a hobby which solves the problem.
Anyways, I've got a secret for you....

Shoot Diary
Day 1:
It's Tuesday 17th of February 2015, 11am, am sorting out everyone in the production and everything that of needed to be recorded. Our first destination of recording was the school library. I gathered all the props included: Manga books, Drawing books, Diary, Pencil Case, Colourings, Pencils, Pen and placed them on the desk. I explained to our actress exactly what she needed to do. My group were not inputting enough as at points they would constantly mess about. It made perfected the scenes difficult and by all means impossible. I had in mind of lots of match on actions but various of the footage taken in the library do not contain that though, after looking at it it's workable.
It's Monday 16th of February 2015, 11am, am out and about with the crew location scouting. We planned out our journey the night before so we knew what we were aiming to achieve. First stop was to the Morden Library. We had slight issues with that because the head office of that library couldn't allow us to record there without, having to wait a week or two until we can get the permit for that. For that reason we switched it to the school library which we had got permission for a lot after the travelling about. Second stop was to the Morden tube station which was a total disaster, as the head office there wouldn't even pick up the phone. Leaving us no chance of having access, we headed off to an hotel to for our actress to have her own personalized room. That too failed as it was rather expensive and they had no desk in the rooms which is inconvenient for our film. Having to get off a bus to get on another like 10 times, I decided that an Art room would be best for our character.

After recording about 30 shots in the library we then went to the Art room to record the last scenes of the day. We had a time limit on how long we could use the camera for every day that a specific technician was in. We got everything set up in the Art room to record the paint scenes. We took some really nice shots in the Art room that I am pleased with. More pleased with than the Library shots. The painting that was done is fantastic too.

Changed Plans
Our original idea of recording a few shots in the tube station failed because the head office wouldn't answer my calls. As a solution I came up with the idea of having the shots done in the art room. The voiceover script had been written again for these changes.

Opening Song
Unrequited Love will feature an exclusive song tailored by me. For my followers this should be quiet the incentive.
Voiceover Script
Where do I start Diary?
I made a fool out of myself. It's the same again; me falling, tripping and walking into things. But this time, I managed to splatter my tray of food on the floor. If everyone's stares weren't bad enough already; my clumsiness topped it all. I slipped and fell flat, right into the spilled food! Did I mention face include? (sight) Yes! I got a food facial mask...
But you know that doesn't really matter....

- Hoodie / Cardigan >> black / grey
- Thick fluffy socks
- Converse
We decided that we wanted our star actress Jenna Lin to wear casual clothing. First came to mind was the All Star Converse shoes. It's a perfect match for the character role of Jenna Lin because it isn't too flashy. I can denote this by the very plain color cordination, nothing too much nor so little.
Since we decided we wanted to go with casual clothing for our star actress Jenna Lin. We thought that getting her to wear a plain grey top would connote that she isn't very flashy. We have to remember that Jenna Lin posess a character that has two personalities and the personality that we want to bring out a lot for the opening sequence is the very intellectual side of hers. Getting expectional grade and generally mastering the art of everything.
As for the bag we decided to go with something roughly like this. We aren't too sure yet and to be honest we aren't that keen on using this prop for our character. It's not giving out any hints or aspects to what the character Jenna Lin likes. However, it's a brief example of what we might go for but aren't reassured.
The glasses plays a big role in the making of Jenna Lin. I say this because the glasses defines her and automatically gives you (audience) the judgement of her being a "geek". It's a stereotype and does reinforce that dominant ideoly. However, we don't want to break too many conventions thus, we wanted Jenna Lin to have this aspect. Since she has two sides we want to break them apart and show you the difference in what we mean by the two characteristics.

We haven't fully decided yet if we're going to go with a cartigan. Though, at the moment we feel it's a good prop that would represent our character Jenna Lin successfully. At the same time we feel that the plain grey top would top her characteristics overall. As I said this is just something we added incase we decided to change our ideas around.

Mood Board
This is a moodboard that I personally think defines what our film Unrequited Love is going to unfold. There's going to be lots of conventions and some broken conventions which will be our selling point to this film that will be continuously encouraged in this plot. Containing loads of mystery, love, hatred and many more that will be unraveled.
Shotlist
This is the pre editing process and is used as a form of guideline during filming, giving estimates on the shot profiles required. It's main goal is to provide a brief criteria for each shot which factors in the shot duration, location, and camera SAM (shot, angle and movement). It is however not set in stone and to allow this flexibility we have provided a notes collumn in the template; this can be used to record input of new ideas or to add modifications to the shot profile if needed. Although the layout and written text is personalised for the author, the design can also facilitate those who aren't as familiar with it.
Logo
At first I had drawn a circle with the color grey. After that I duplicated the layer giving me two circles. With one of the circles I went to blending options and added the effects Bevel & Emboss, Stroke, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Satin, Color Overlay and finally Drop Shadow. What I did next was I went to Styles which can be found right at the top of the blending options which allowed me to customize my own pallet. I then mixed black and purple together to give what you can see in the center of the logo. After I was done doing that I drew out a heart shape that's also in the center of the logo. I decided to give the heart flavor by going to the blending mode and putting it to Darken. The last step was adding text. Now with the text I used the font "Also" that's actually the name <<< typed in the letter L re-sized it till I thought it was big enough, I then bent the text side-wards and duplicated that and moved it to the right. As you can see from the logo above there is one L smaller than the other. The one at the front is the bigger L and the one behind it is the smaller. The L stands for both Love and Life = LOVELIFE which is the name of our studio. That was how it use to look but then there were a lot of changes that were made after and it ended up transforming into this heart shape ribbon with the text formatted totally differently.

Storyboard
This is part one of the storyboard me and my group made. As shown in the boxes and description boxes these are the first few shots that will be recorded or taken to account in-between the main shot lists. Since our film is based around love we wanted our first few shots of the scene with our main actress playing the role of Jenna Lin a girly complex. Even though she doesn't have the average brain span because of how intellectually superb her mind-set is she is still a young girl and of course girls have their attraction on cute items e.g teddy bears, iPhones etc. We did this because we think it's necessary for her to have the basic fundamentals a girl would have.
Blog Design
With the blog design I decided to make it unique by connecting the custom-made artwork to the story of Unrequited Love. I initially thought of this concept when my group and I started to really plan out our thoughts for the plot. Now throughout my whole blogger page everything links in with Unrequited Love making it fantastic! I personally think that it will engage the audience even more by doing so and so on. The reason behind to why I did this was solely on making my blogger interesting and grasping the attention of the people that visit the page. From seeing loads of other blogs, pro designed ones especially all of them had a unique aspect and revolved around what their blog is based on. Thus, was one of the reasons why I did so but to be fair, I do ton-loads of creative work and this happened to be one.

Film Classification
We decided as a group to give our film a 12A rating certificate, according to the BBFC guidelines. Similarly, we used public feedback to help decide. For example, the results from the survey we used to construct our audience profile conceived that our most frequent respondents belonged to the 16 to 24 age groups; this range now consisting of our target audience; the 12A certificate is ideal for accommodating all of the target audience. Now, returning to the BBFC guideline, the main areas of the narrative considered which makes it a 12A rated film would be:
Language: Moderate to light use of foul language, pushes it to a 12A from a U/PG.
Violence: Although not glamourized, or dwelled on, violence is present in the narrative; however since it is crucial to narrative development and is motivated by revenge rather than senseless bloodlust. It is still appropriate for a 12A certificate.
Theme: The central theme of the film is relationships but there are undertones of revenge and blackmail which motivate the theme of violence, making it unsuitable for a U or PG certificate.
There are other areas which the BBFC guideline considers such as discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, nudity and sex which affect certificate ratings.

Location Scouting
As a group we visited the locations we had in store to use for our opening sequence. For us finding the right location was essential because it's linked to the mise-en-scene. The setting is crucial in a task like this because it tells the audience a lot about the character. For instance if we took establishing shots you automatically get ideas of what the story could be based on.
The locations we decided on were; Morden Underground, Morden Library and a Room with a desk. For us to have permission to use these sources we had to travel there and get permission. That didn't work due to time. Our first stop was the Morden Library where I spoke to three people to only find out that I couldn't get the permission to record there because not only did I have to fill in paperwork but I had to wait a few days till they get submitted for the permission.
I had spoken to two people that work in the Modern Underground and they said "You have to contact the head office to get a permit to record"and so I did. However, they won't even pick up the phone and so that idea went straight to the trash. These issues led to the mise-en-scene changing to something completely different. For the library we changed it to the school's library and the station along with the room with a desk were changed for an Art room. The room with a desk was too expensive so we decided to remove that idea.
Pitch Feedback
My group and I had been asked two questions that were based around the unique selling point and target audience. The unique selling point to our film (opening sequence) is the multi-cultural and ethnic diversity. This is rare because not many Romantic films have this concept, they usually reinforce the dominant ideology. This is something that our film "Unrequited Love" opposes. In a way, we're creating a controversial film. Our plot is breaking conventions in Romantic films. We was asked if this was a good idea? As for target audience we picked the groups C2, D, and E. We was asked why those particular groups? Overall it was a success!

Language
This film will be a Romantic movie with elements of comedy so that the audience is kept entertained. However, it will be a mature love story. As it is going to be a British independent film, it will be a modern British Romance film so that our audience can connect with it. The equilibrium of this story is Jenna Lin realizing how much Ryan Walker loves her. The message we are trying to get across is that love can come in any forms, through any way. Be it even the wrong way.
Lead Characters
Jenna Lin - Asian
She isn't very popular, however she is intellectual. She is a very hardworking girl who want's to be on top of everything, mainly studies which makes her a nerd. She is 17 years old and in the same college as Ryan. She lives with parents who are upper middle class.
Ryan Walker - Black British
He is confident but does not like to interact much with people. Also, doesn't like going out much and keeps things to himself. He is 18 years old and in college. Lives with his family, who considers themselves in the upper middle class.
With this character we are going against the dominant ideology as usually in Rom-Com's or modern Romance movies, the guy is quite popular, has a high esteem, confident and very sociable.

Production / Industry
'Easy A' which is a story based on a girl in high school inspired us for the character Jenna Lin. The girl in Easy A is portrayed as a nobody at the beginning, who seems to be into studying. However, we are shown how she can become the talk of the school in a few mere days by changing her personality. Also, from the movie 'A Cinderella Story' we were able to progress Jenna Lin's character further as the Cinderella in that story is also hardly noticed by others.
Plot
"The story revolves around Jenna Lin and Ryan Walker who both go to the same college, however have not spoken due to both of them being reserved. Jenna represents herself as a nerd, who can be found mainly in the library, either studying or reading, due to her wanting to be on top of everything. Jenna is a kind of character who does talk to people but only makes a few people her friends. Also, she doesn't like to talk to people she hasn't been introduced to."
"One day when Ryan is out walking he spots Jenna and recognises her immediately however, is totally stunned at her appearance which is totally different to the one at college. He is completely shocked as she is behaving like a normal teenager, who is seen having fun with friends; wearing make-up, which he has never seen her in. Instantly he feels attracted to her.
"Struggling with his curiosity to find out more about her he decides to follow her; in other words, stalk her. Taking his opportunity, he decides to capture pictures of her without her knowledge.
"After that encounter he couldn't help but follow her around college and observe every action of hers."
"Being the unsocial kind he is, he uses her pictures as a form of blackmail for her to go on a date with him and her not wanting the pictures to leak, agrees"
"However, Ryan received a big blow when Jenna admits that she never felt anything for him, breaking his heart.

Logline
A modern day tale, introducing an ordinary girl; and her two different personalities. A nerd, a girl who is in her own world when it comes to reading, is noticed by a guy. Not the popular kind, but the same as her who likes to keep to himself. An exciting story, presenting how love is gained by taking wrong actions. It might seem right at that moment, but what would happen when it comes all back crashing down.

In-depth analysis
Titles and Opening sequence of Hi! School - Love on
Mis en scene-setting
The opening sequence starts off with animations of the three protagonists and the setting magically appearing, as a book is opening by itself. I can tell that it's going to involve super-natural powers as well as Romance by the two boys standing on each side of the girl wearing angel clothes. This could indicate that there is a love triangle.
Mise en scene-props/costume
We can see our main characters wear different clothes in the opening sequence. We have two boys wearing what you call casual clothes in Korea, and then we have the angel girl who is wearing something extraordinary in the time period. Something that looks home made at the same time it looks like clothing a nun would wear. Lastly we have the magical book a possession owned by the angel world. This is a key aspect to the film because that prop brings in the love triangle. Without the book there wouldn't be a love triangle and the boys wouldn't have met the angel girl and neither would she have met the boys.
Mise en scene-characters
Furthermore into the opening sequence we have what happens at the end of the film at the beginning. However, it doesn't show us everything that happens at the end, leaving us with suspense and wanting to find out who was that girl? Why didn't they show her face? ETC. It starts off by showing one of the boys in University walking then happens to bump into a mysterious girl but, she ignores him and forgets to take the book that she has dropped.
Mise en scene-lighting
This lighting is excellent for Romantic films because the weather is sunny.
Acting
We have one of the main protagonist have his straight face expression when apologizing to the young lady who he bumped into by accident. Once he looked at the book that she forgot to take his facial expression was like haven't I seen this book before? I remember giving this book to someone I once loved type expression. It was a facial expression that got him thinking as well as the audience to feel sympathy for him.
Make up
The make up put on is to make them look natural as possible but to match with the weather, the bright colors to give us a sense of bubbly life.
Setting
The opening sequence is outside of a University somewhere in South Korea. I can tell this by being a Korean film and that everyone in the opening scene are Korean people so I doubt it will be set in North Korea, New York or even London. Plus all the major stars in Korea are in the south.
Camera
From when we see one of the main protagonist going up stairs to go inside the University there is a long distance shot from afar panning to the left. Then we two different shots in the count of 2 beats including a close up and mid shot of the boy and the mysterious girl. After the accidental bump when the boy goes to pick up the girls folders we see another close up shot of his face to convey his facial expression at that point.
Editing
After the animations which is fantastic we have a short fade in approximately about 2 - 4 seconds. The way they done the editing for this is really interesting. Korean films have a different style compare to westernized films and shows. They include shots that are probably not even authentic in the exam boards but these shots give us different emotions, and I personally find that fantastic. Not only do they do the basic fundamentals but they include various types of shots that shows us the setting in detail.
Sound
In the opening sequence they have a really lovey song sung only for the film. After that when the University scene fades in there is a beautiful orchestra playing the pianos and violins, and people in the campus talking with each other so there is diegetic sound and non diegetic sound.
Enigmas
The film creates a lot of Enigmas such as in the opening sequence why doesn't it show the girls face that the boy bumps into? Don't normally girls say something in a situation like that? Or why is the girl having her back to the boy when his talking to her? Isn't that being rude to the person trying to speak to you? The list can go on forever. This film has created so much questions that can be asked just from that little scene.

Titles & Opening Sequences Analysis
100 Days with Mr. Arrogant (2004)
Mise en scene - SETTING
The opening sequence includes lots of close ups and panning shots. You would assume that things taking place are based around school. This is because it starts of with a bunch of girls wearing school uniform and sitting on a chair with a little desk in-front. These props are what you would typically find in a school. The dialogue used in the opening sequence tells us immediately what the plot is. From the dialogue we can connote that there is going to be a relationship between student and Mr. Arrogant who is represented as 'hot'. Straight away we can tell this by the amount of close up shots there is for Mr. Arrogant. Conveying to the audience that he is vain and all females admire him.
All of the shots are very high key lighting, giving off a very cheerful, energetic and amazing feel. All of the colors are bright which could denote the arrogance of Mr. Arrogant, wherever he is the place will always be cheerful, energetic and give off an amazing feel.
Editing - Shot selection and order, continuity
There isn't anything special about the opening format. It's your typical romance and comedy. It gives you a sense of who the main roles are by the long duration footage on the individual. At first we have the girls in school and then it switches over to Mr.Arrogant who we immediately are able to tell that it's based around them.
A lot of the editing start to come in when Mr.Arrogant is shown. We get a glimpse of slow motion when he starts walking. Also, there you will start to notice the sound effects, music and titles which appear.
Camera
The sequence consists of close ups and panning shots. This straight away tells us where the main focus of the film is. During the opening sequence, there are a few panning shots which denote the confidence of Mr.Arrogant. The titles don't come up on the footage. They are separately placed in between. The text looks all bubbly and fun which could denote how the film is going to be.

Survey Results
We then received another set of data showing which gender did the survey and found out that 10 more girls than boys did our survey. This is something that we expected as a group because our target audience are females so it makes sense to us that we have more girls.
We also asked in the survey questions what ethnicity would you prefer to have as the main role in the opening sequence? The results show that more people voted for any ethnicity compared to a specific individual.
We then asked what gender would you prefer to have as the main role. The survey shows that more people want to have both genders instead of a specific individual.
Lastly we asked people if they wanted music, dialogue or both in the opening sequence. The survey results show that more people voted for music.
These are some quotes that I've taken from people that have commented on what the main character/characters should be.
